This report, published in the Winter 2021 issue of Democracy: A Journal of Ideas, explores the data describing racial disparities in unemployment and wages, considers the shortcomings of traditional economic theories that (attempt to) explain racially disparate labor market outcomes, and advances stratification economics as a better framework for understanding the manner in which these labor disparities persist and are perpetuated.
